Revisiones The X-files: I want to believe

What can I say... It felt good to see Mulder and Scully again. But I have the feeling that this movie has been done only to do a reunion... The plot is in fact very cheap. It is very far from the great episodes written by Chris Carter during the first years of the series. The cheap story of "I Want to Believe" could have easily been presented in a two part episode. In my opinion, this movie won't get a lot of attention, except for the fans of the show.I really "wanted to believe", per say, but this amazing X-Files series has no,w become cheap and this movie really disapointed me. I don't think that any new movie will come close to what The X-Files used to be, but we never know...
Esta es una revisión en francés por Arnaud Mangin, distinta en su apreciación a la revisión anterior; más detallada y se nota que es una persona que conoce a la serie, aquí está el artículo original publicado por Filmsactu, está en francés.

This second x-file - which is not really one - might ?????[sorry, I’m a native French speaker but I don’t get the meaning of the first sentence!! well...] It’s the opposite of the first movie, released 10 years ago. So, the film is quite a surprise, and not a bad one. It demystifies the x files universe as the fans have first loved then followed, it’s rather a run-of-the-mill, standalone and easy-to-follow plotline. M&S have discarded their iconic uniforms (one of them is badly shaven, both are dressed on the cheap side) and each of them is looking for fulfilment in the other’s ideology in order to find some kind of paradise of the mind [sic], far from monsters. The good thing is the characters take really centre stage and at the same time the film is bordering on a crime story movie without too many monsters and other awful things. Still, the film is a letdown because it lacks ambition. It’s not a piece of art, but it’s still enjoyable.
After all those years, surprisingly enough CC privileges a film that is mature and also an evolution towards a realism that is slightly defeatist, at the exact opposite to what was the first movie - a gift for geeks. I Want to Believe is not part of the x-files mythology, there’s no will to keep the original mythology alive. As if updating the mythology would have been like a bad revival. The movie is in keeping with the series and strongly emphasizes the not so glorious evolution of its heroes who are at a stage in their lives where it is time for them to leave the aliens alone. The film is a pretext for (??) a therapy session, like “I work at the FBI, get me out of there”, it’s a study in stubbornness, on different levels.
Without giving away spoilers (because the creators have had a hard time keeping the plot a secret) M&S are summoned from a medical practice for her and from a hermit’s den for him to help their old agency find an agent who has mysteriously disappeared; which will lead them into a case that is slightly mysterious... and that’s it!
What? Ten years for a kidnapping case? Yes. But in deliberately choosing a basic plot centered on a simple police investigation, CC makes the most of it to flesh out his storyline nicely. The film looks like your basic thriller, though it’s extremely well-written – plot-wise and character-wise (plus the performances are top notch) and so both the story and the relationship daringly manage to supersede the supernatural of the story. The film deals with personal rejuvenation, faith that is being questioned [????sorry, again, the French makes no sense whatsoever...] - faith in all its aspects : moral, scientific, rational and its opposite- and religion. The message thus conveyed prevents the film from being preachy, takes the mystique out of organized religion, and emphasizes introspection from two opposing viewpoints. I Want to Believe, indeed, even though we (and them) are not done with looking for the truth.
In fact, what bothers me is that in his eagerness and his will to focus on the moral principles, CC has forgotten to focus on the cinematographic form and thus delivers a product that resembles more a luxury direct-to-video release than theatrical cinema. His direction is rather weak - one or two tracking shots of his main actress will get him applause from the fans when they first see her, his CinemaScope screen is not always filled up to the brim, and the six notes of Mark Snow’s x-files theme remind viewers they are going to see the right movie.... Those same notes are used again some time later to add a humorous, completely gratuitous touch, verging on the parody, but it’s fun nonetheless! Beside that, it’s a little too much of an introspection-ridden film to let the magic completely operate on the casual viewers for whom the movie was made, let alone on the hard-core fans!
To conclude, The x files I Want to Believe starts as a nice surprise (because clearly there is nothing more to expect from it) but it doesn’t last in spite of the plot which sometimes flirts with Grangé [French mystery writer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Ch...he_Grang%C3%A9 whose books have been adapted on the screen, especially Les Rivières Pourpres - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0228786/ ] - not necessarily a bad thing – or with Stuart Gordon in the film’s last act. The only question, the only double mystery remains to see whether it is an x-file or not, and whether a screen adaptation was necessary
